Client Spotlight: Family Ski In Chamonix
WELL PLACED TRAVEL HELPS A FAMILY OF FOUR FIND THEIR PERFECT SCHOOL BREAK SKI TRIP IN CHAMONIX, FRANCE
A charming village at the base of Mont Blanc has drawn mountaineers, adventurers, and winter travelers for centuries. Chamonix-Mont-Blanc sits in a dramatic valley in the French Alps, flanked by some of the most spectacular peaks in Europe. Walkable streets wind through old, characterful architecture, fondue appears on every table, and the mountains above genuinely rank among the most awe-inspiring terrain on earth. This is not a purpose-built ski bubble. Chamonix is a real town with history, culture, and family-run businesses that also have five separate ski areas climbing its surrounding peaks.
American skiers have been paying attention. Over the past several years, US travelers making the trip to Europe for ski vacations has grown significantly, driven by a few converging factors: the expansion of the Ikon Pass to include European resorts, a favorable comparison of European ski culture to the resort-style experience at home, and a broader appetite for travel that delivers something beyond the lift line. Skiers who have spent seasons at Vail, Park City, or Jackson Hole are finding that Europe offers steeper terrain, quieter villages, and a sense that skiing here weaves into the daily life of the place rather than layers on top of it as an amenity.
“We were looking for a family getaway that married a great ski vacation with some European flavor. Chamonix fit that ask perfectly.”
Chamonix stands apart. Rugged where other Alpine resorts are polished, independent where others are managed, and unmistakably French — every meal, wander through town, and conversation with a local feels like genuine cultural encounter rather than curated experience. The Savoyard cuisine alone makes the flight worthwhile: raclette, tartiflette, fondue Savoyarde, and the local charcuterie that fills every menu.
And then there's the geography. From Chamonix, you can ski five distinct areas in a single valley. You can ride a historic cogwheel train to a glacier and walk inside it. You can pass through the Mont Blanc Tunnel and emerge in Italy for lunch. Geneva, Switzerland is about an hour away by car. For families who want skiing and Europe, not skiing or Europe, Chamonix makes the case effortlessly.
This family knew all of this, at least in the abstract. What they needed was someone to make it real, and quickly. With limited lead time and a lot of moving parts — flights, ski logistics, luggage transfers across two countries, hotels worth staying in — they called Well Placed Travel.
pulling it all together
Last-minute trips to Europe require a particular kind of planning: decisive, fast, and built on relationships that were already in place long before the phone rang.
When the family called with a compressed timeline and a clear vision — great skiing, European flavor, kid-appropriate — the timing added a significant wrinkle: their kids’ school break week aligned with France’s February school vacation week. Availability across the Chamonix valley tightens dramatically during this window, and options that might be easy to secure in March simply don't exist in mid-February. Well Placed Travel vetted shortlist of properties we trust, moved quickly to assess what was genuinely available, and presented the family with several strong options that met their criteria. Knowing which properties are worth the price — and which ones can actually accommodate a family well — meant decisions could happen quickly.
“Well Placed Travel stepped right in to understand our needs and quickly pulled together a fantastic itinerary that met all our wants and needs. WPT was able to plan, provide us with a variety of options, and execute the details in far shorter time than we could have ever managed on our own.”
two city structure
Flying into Geneva and spending a night there before heading to Chamonix isn't just a pleasant extra - it's smart travel. It gives a family arriving from the US a buffer to shake off the jet lag, ease into European time, and see a genuinely interesting city before the mountain demands their full attention. Geneva, as the family discovered, is absolutely worth a day.
With a private transfer quickly taking them to their hotel, they had time to check in and unwind before the afternoon’s activity- a private Tuk Tuk Tour. Despite the rain, the family loved the tour of the city- complete with covered electric tuk tuk and blankets provided by the guide.
From Dad: "I had in my mind it was more oriented around just chocolate tastings, but in fact it was a mini-tour of the city with some chocolate tastings thrown in — and that format was even better for us. A good way to kick off the trip, even in the rain."
A Relais & Châteaux Chalet to call home
The Carrier family — rooted in Chamonix for several centuries — has shaped the Hameau Albert 1er into something that resists easy description. It's not a hotel so much as a small world: old chalets and stone buildings clustered around gardens and a vegetable plot that feeds two on-site restaurants, one of which holds a Michelin star. The stone main building dates to 1903 and sits beautifully alongside the warm, characterful Maison Carrier restaurant.
Of the hotel options presented to the family, the Hameau rose to the top for good reason.
The Chalet Grépon answered every requirement in a single unit. The family wanted genuine comfort, somewhere warm and restorative to come back to after a day on the mountain. The Grépon delivered: a wood-burning stove, a multi-jet bathtub, a private terrace with panoramic mountain views, and a modern interior in an immaculate white palette. One roof for the whole family rather than two separate hotel rooms, which proved logistically cleaner, and simply better with kids. The boys claimed the bunk room.
The hotel's private shuttle, operating from 8:30am to 5:00pm, with genuinely helpful drivers, connected all five ski areas in the valley, free of charge. The spa, an indoor-outdoor heated pool, hot tub, sauna, and steam room became the boys' personal domain. After every day on the mountain, there they were, soaking in the hot water with a direct view of the Alps. As family rituals go, it's hard to beat.

“By far the favorite element- outside of skiing- was our lodging in Chamonix. The family chalet was the perfect home base for the week. The space was perfectly designed- the layout, the ingenious storage spaces, the wood burning stove- truly made the trip. Also, can’t say enough about the convenience of the ski storage and on demand hotel shuttle to/from the mountains. Worth every cent and more! ”
things to do
The family built their days in Chamonix around skiing, but the mountain is only part of what Chamonix offers. Centuries of identity live in its streets: stone buildings, Savoyard restaurants where families have cooked the same regional dishes for generations, and the particular rhythm of a town that predates ski lifts by a long way. And, the incredible nature of the region make it a winter destination for exploration.
Montenvers Train to Mer de Glace
The Montenvers Train to Mer de Glace ranks among Chamonix's finest day trips, whisking visitors to one of Europe's most expansive glaciers. This charming historic cogwheel train departs from Chamonix and climbs through dense pine forests to Montenvers at 1,913 metres. Once there, the famous Mont Blanc glacier awaits, including a descent into the Grotte de Glace ice cave, where you can wander through a subglacial museum adorned with elaborate ice sculptures. The Mer de Glace Glaciorium adds an educational dimension, giving visitors insight into the glacier's ever-changing behaviour.
Before boarding the train back, make time for the Refuge du Montenvers, a welcoming mountain refuge that doubles as a casual café and a proper alpine restaurant. The Restaurant du Montenvers champions local produce and regional dishes, but it's the breathtaking surroundings that elevate a simple lunch into something truly memorable.
For winter visitors seeking non-ski activities in Chamonix, the Montenvers Train delivers a compelling blend of history, geology, and spectacular mountain scenery. Do keep in mind that this excursion is highly weather-dependent, so checking conditions in advance is recommended.

visit couermayeur, italy
Just across the Mont Blanc Tunnel lies the charming Italian alpine town of Courmayeur, making it one of the most rewarding and accessible day trips from Chamonix. The journey takes just 15 minutes by car through the tunnel, transporting visitors from France into the heart of the Aosta Valley and, arguably, into a far more relaxed pace of life. In winter, Courmayeur draws visitors with its excellent ski area, offering over 100km of pistes with the dramatic south face of Mont Blanc as a backdrop — a perspective entirely different from anything the French side offers. Beyond the slopes, the town's picturesque pedestrianised centre is lined with designer boutiques, cosy bars, and exceptional Italian restaurants where long, indulgent lunches are very much the norm. A visit to one of the traditional enoteche for a glass of Aosta Valley wine and a plate of local charcuterie is practically obligatory. Whether you're drawn by the skiing, the food, the shopping, or simply strolling through a beautifully preserved mountain village, Courmayeur offers a wonderfully different flavour to a Chamonix holiday — and with so little effort required to get there, there's really no reason not to go.

stuff happens
What’s that saying about even the best laid plans? Let’s face it- it’s travel. Things happen. The family faced their fair share of travel woes, but they rolled with it. On the inbound trip, their ski gear got delayed in Amsterdam. On the way home, a blizzard hit the Northeast US, causing them to spend an extra day in Geneva. There are worse places to be.
But, we all know that Mother Nature does what she pleases. Four of five days on the mountain arrived with snow and limited visibility. On one day, a major storm the night before triggered avalanche closures across four of the five ski areas; gondola lines at the one that stayed open stretched past two hours. The family made a call: a 45-minute train to nearby St. Gervais, some good runs on uncrowded slopes, and — as Dad noted — the boys' introduction to European rail travel. They made it work.
The one truly clear day? "Absolutely beautiful," Dad said.
how they felt coming home
Tired. Happy. Already thinking about going back.
What the family also discovered — and what US travelers consistently find surprising — is how accessible Chamonix actually is. Geneva sits barely an hour away. One night in Switzerland, a private transfer to France, and you stand at the foot of the Alps. The trip that felt logistically daunting turns out to be remarkably within reach.
As for working with Well Placed Travel: "Given our last-minute decision to make the trip happen, WPT was key in providing options and driving us to decisions to meet our deadlines,” said Dad. When we handle the planning, you show up and ski. You wander town. You eat the fondue. That's the whole point.
Thanks to the family for their contribution to the article, photos and trust in Well Placed Travel to deliver an important family trip.
