Client Spotlight: A Family Hawaii Escape
When a family needs to feel taken care of, Well Placed Travel shows up — all the way to the Big Island.
Some trips are born from wanderlust. Others come from something deeper- a year that took more than it gave, and a decision to stop putting off the kind of experience that reminds you why it all matters.
That's what Well Placed Travel was handed when this family came calling. They needed to feel taken care of, not just accommodated, but genuinely cared for, in the way you feel on the best trips of your life. They referenced their honeymoon in Fiji as the bar: beautiful, secluded, truly special. They didn't have the bandwidth to manage the details. They needed someone to manage them.
That's where we come in. And with a trip this layered, including a split itinerary across several states, a scuba certification to coordinate, multiple arrival times, and a family reunion on the Big Island, the details were considerable.

the first step
Before a single hotel booking or activity sourcing, the conversation starts with the Discovery Call, or client intake meeting. It's not a questionnaire. It's a conversation about who your family is, how you travel, what you love, and what would make you feel like the trip was made just for you. It happens when and where it can, and for this client it was on their commute home from work for about an hour so we can get to know one another.
“The client intake meeting was absolutely critical to craft the perfect itinerary for our family. The itinerary really captured our family’s style and favorite activities.”
This is what the boutique travel advisor experience is designed to do. The details gathered in that initial conversation — the fact that the kids love being in motion and making new friends, that the adults wanted a balance of half-day activities and half-day relaxation, that the family had visited virtually every Hawaiian island and needed something fresh — those details shape everything that comes after.
The service, the client noted, was also "highly personalized" and happened "much speedier than anticipated." When you don't have the bandwidth to start from scratch, that speed matters.
Home Base: Mauna Lani, an Auberge Resort
Imagine waking up to turquoise Pacific waters just steps from your lanai — that's everyday life at Mauna Lani, a breathtaking 34-acre oceanfront paradise on Hawai'i's Kohala Coast, where nearly half a mile of pristine beach is practically your backyard. Whether you're a couple stealing a sunset cocktail at the Surf Shack or a family splashing across three incredible pools before hitting the white sand beach, there's something magical waiting around every corner. Thrill-seekers and ocean lovers will be obsessed with Kainalu Ocean Sports — think sunrise canoe paddles, snorkeling beyond the reef, and private surf lessons led by world-class watermen. When it's time to unwind, the Auberge Spa's traditional Hawaiian treatments and the resort's championship golf, pickleball, and tennis will keep everyone blissfully busy from morning to night. With stunning oceanfront dining at CanoeHouse, cultural petroglyph hikes, and a name that literally means "mountain reaching heaven," Mauna Lani isn't just a vacation — it's the trip your family and your relationship will be talking about forever.
The resort offered complimentary daily activities, snorkeling gear, kids' programming, paddleboards, yoga, and more — all woven into a stay that felt anything but ordinary. There was structure when the family wanted it, and stillness when they needed it. As a Virtuoso advisor, Well Placed Travel secured enhanced amenities at this property — including daily breakfast for the full family, a $200 resort credit, and complimentary room upgrades subject to availability. This is the kind of access that comes from knowing where to book, and how.
“Mauna Lani is EXCEPTIONAL and exactly what we were looking for. The room is divine, the grounds are gorgeous, the service is terrific, and the food is outstanding.”
exploring natural beauty
father-son scuba
The adventure kicked off early when father and son touched down on the Big Island ahead of the rest of the crew, checking into the Waikoloa Hilton for two days of pure adrenaline. First order of business? Picking up the Jeep — a non-negotiable item on the kid's wish list — and cruising around the island like true explorers. But the real mission was out on the deep blue, where after two early mornings diving into the Pacific, the son surfaced with something even better than a tan: his brand-new scuba certification. Safe to say, the trip was already a win before it even really began.
Once mom and daughter arrived, the family enjoyed a happy reunion and five days together carefully planned with the right amount of activity and relaxation.
The Kohala Waterfall Adventure was an early standout — a full-day journey through the lush north end of the island, past plantation towns, ancient lava flows, and through a locked private gate onto an 1800s-era irrigation trail with hidden waterfalls, tunnels carved from solid rock, and a swimming hole at the end. Their guide came loaded with rain jackets, walking sticks, and stories — and had the kids fully engaged from start to finish. Lunch was served on a cliff overlooking the sea. "The waterfalls were beautiful," the family shared, "and we had a lovely lunch along the cliffs of the island."
Then came the volcano. A guided visit to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park — Kilauea, steam vents, a hike through a 500-year-old lava tube — led by a guide described as "incredibly knowledgeable." The family walked away not just with memories, but with an understanding of the geology, history, culture, and legends that make this place unlike anywhere else on earth.
But the moment the whole family remembers? The sunrise canoe. Before the day had properly started, they were out on the water as humpback whales breached in the distance and a pod of dolphins cut through the Pacific alongside them.
good stuff in between
Not every great memory from a trip comes from a guided excursion. Some of the best moments happened in the unhurried spaces between the big adventures.
Their daughter's favorites were quietly perfect: the pool, the cabana, the chocolate seashell waiting in the hotel room. The experience of being somewhere beautiful where the small things were done thoughtfully and where she could just be a kid. The kids' club gave the children their own independent world to explore, while mom and dad claimed a stretch of time at the adults-only pool that felt genuinely restorative.
Mornings started early and together. Evenings wound down slowly. Some days had nothing on the schedule at all. That, too, was exactly right.
Big Island Teaches You
"We were struck by the different climates on the different parts of the Big Island — from the warm, dry resort area along the beach to the Kohala Rain Forest with its trees and waterfalls, to the expanses of desolate volcanic rock."
They were also visiting during humpback season. All you had to do was stare out at the water for a few minutes and you would see the spouts from their blowholes, tail fins, and even full breaches.
That kind of magic doesn't have to be scheduled. It just happens — when you're in the right place, at the right time, with nothing else to worry about.
coming home
They came home thinking about their next trip- Europe, Australia, maybe another beach vacation.
They came home with a son who is now a certified open water diver. A daughter who got the beach vacation of her childhood dreams. Two parents who truly exhaled.
Your next family adventure awaits. let Well Placed Travel make it unforgettable.
