Client Spotlight: A Happy Couple’s Japan Winter Journey
From military helicopter to Mount Fuji to world class powder in Niseko, Well Placed Travel sent clients on an unforgettable winter adventure through Japan beyond the guidebooks and immersed in authenticity.
When Mark and Pablo reached out to Well Placed Travel about planning a winter escape to Japan, they had a clear vision: culture, craftsmanship, exceptional food, and elevated comfort- all while maintaining an authentic, relaxed feel. What unfolded was a 16-day journey that perfectly balanced Japan's ancient traditions with modern luxury, culminating in some of the world's best powder skiing.
This itinerary was designed completely around what Mark and Pablo wanted, just as every Well Placed Travel journey is built from the ground up to reflect each client's unique interests, pace, and aspirations.
Why Japan? Why Now?
"This trip was about more than just traveling," they shared. "It was about experiencing something different, meaningful, and beautifully curated. We wanted a destination that combined culture, craftsmanship, great food, and elevated comfort, while still feeling relaxed and authentic. Japan gave us that balance in the best way."
Having designed over ten Japan itineraries for our clients, we know that this country rewards thoughtful planning. The difference between a good trip and an extraordinary one often comes down to the details—the right guide at the right temple, a reservation at an intimate cocktail bar with just ten seats, or timing a helicopter tour to catch Mount Fuji in perfect conditions.
Highlights from the Journey
Tokyo: First Impressions with Expert Eyes
Mark and Pablo arrived in Tokyo on December 27th, jumping straight into the energy of this magnificent city. We arranged a full-day private tour that did more than check off landmarks. It built their confidence to navigate Tokyo independently for the rest of their stay.
Their guide led them through the historic Yanesen area, where traditional architecture survived the war intact, then on to Ueno Park and the ancient Senso-ji temple in Asakusa. Between shrines and shopping districts, they learned to master the metro system, discovered hidden artisan shops, and were introduced to Japanese dining etiquette over lunch.
But one of the most unique experiences came on December 30th: a private helicopter tour to Mount Fuji. Unlike standard helicopters limited by wind conditions, this military-grade aircraft brought them remarkably close to the iconic peak. The day included exploring Lake Kawaguchi and hiking through Aokigahara Forest before returning to Tokyo—an experience that topped Mark and Pablo's list of favorites.
“The helicopter ride to Mount Fuji was absolutely unforgettable. And seeing Tokyo through a guided tour gave us such a great sense of the city.”
A Taste of Home Cooking in Shinjuku
On Pablo's birthday, we arranged something particularly special: a private cooking class in Satoru's Shinjuku apartment. Born in Hokkaido and raised surrounded by vegetable fields, Satoru learned traditional techniques from his grandmother and now shares authentic home-style Japanese cooking that you simply can't find in restaurants.
Together, they prepared traditional dishes using Satoru's mother's handmade organic miso, a secret ingredient passed down from his grandfather's miso factory. After cooking, they sat down to share the meal and stories about Japanese culture and cuisine.
"The cooking class added a hands-on cultural experience," Mark noted, highlighting how these personal connections enriched their journey.
Kyoto: Temples, Gardens, and Hidden Gins
The Shinkansen whisked them to Kyoto on New Year's Day, where they checked into The Chapter Kyoto, a boutique property that Mark and Pablo described as "calm with great attention to detail."
Their private day tour took them from Gion's spiritual sites—including Yasaka Shrine and the hilltop Kiyomizu-dera temple—to Nishiki Market for traditional Kyoto lunch and culinary education. The afternoon brought them to iconic sites like the Golden Pavilion and Zen gardens, depending on their interests.
But some of our favorite recommendations are the off-itinerary gems. We sent them to Bee's Knees, an intimate gin bar with maybe ten seats, where an old-school hip hop DJ serves extraordinary gin and tonics. "It's a must-see," our travel partner had enthusiastically noted—and Mark and Pablo agreed.
The Kyoto night foodie tour through Gion rounded out their cultural immersion, introducing them to obanzai (Kyoto's traditional seasoned dishes) and sake pairings in atmospheric local restaurants.
“Be open to trying new foods, new flavors, and new ways of doing things - that’s a big part of what makes Japan so special. ”
Osaka & Hiroshima: Contrasts and Contemplation
In Osaka, they experienced the city's renowned food scene through a bar-hopping tour in Namba, visiting hidden izakayas and tasting kushikatsu (fried skewers) in atmospheric alleyways filled with locals. The Osaka LGBTQ night tour offered yet another perspective on the city's diverse culture.
The day trip to Hiroshima provided a profound counterpoint to the trip's celebratory moments. Their private guide led them through Peace Memorial Park, the haunting Atomic Bomb Dome, and the Memorial Museum before taking the ferry to Miyajima Island. There, the "floating" torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine—built in 593 and appearing to rest on water at high tide—offered a moment of serene beauty and spiritual reflection.
Niseko: Powder Paradise
The final chapter of their journey took them north to Hokkaido and the legendary powder of Niseko—JaPOW, as devotees call it. We arranged their entire ski package: private transfers from New Chitose Airport, three nights at MUWA Niseko (a ski-in/ski-out property with a Michelin-starred restaurant), two days of lift tickets for the interconnected Niseko United resorts, and premium ski rentals.
"MUWA Niseko was the ultimate cozy-luxury retreat after skiing," they shared. "Skiing in Niseko with perfect snow conditions was the ultimate way to end the trip."
“What stood out most was the kindness and respect woven into daily life. From small gestures to exceptional hospitality, you really feel welcomed everywhere. It made the experience feel not just easy, but genuinely meaningful. Japan has a way of making you want to slow down, observe, and appreciate the little details.”
Reflections and Advice for Future Travelers
Don’t get lost in translation
A smart recommendation from Mark and Pablo: “Having a translation app makes everything much easier if you don't speak Japanese, and locals are very helpful and welcoming when you ask politely. It's important to respect the culture and customs, since you're stepping into a very thoughtful and traditional society. If it's your first time visiting Asia, it might feel different at first, but it's an experience that's 100% worth it."
A Note on New Year's Travel
Mark and Pablo's trip included the New Year's period, which offered a unique glimpse into Japanese culture but required exceptional advance planning. Unlike Western New Year's celebrations, this an important family holiday in Japan. It’s a quiet, reflective time when most Japanese spend time at home.
What this means for travelers: many restaurants, shops, and even guides may be unavailable during this period. There are no big New Year's Eve festivities, no Times Square-style countdowns or fireworks displays. Instead, it's a sacred time for cleansing the previous year and visiting shrines to welcome the new year with intention and gratitude.
If you're considering travel during this period, plan at least nine months in advance to secure the itinerary you want. The right expectations are essential: embrace the quiet, appreciate the cultural significance, and understand that this slow, contemplative pace is part of what makes the experience so meaningful. With proper planning - like we did for Mark and Pablo - you can still have extraordinary experiences while respecting this important cultural tradition.
